AFRODAD, in collaboration with Christian Aid – London, is in the process of intensifying its involvement in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) work. AFRODAD is particularly interested in this process for many reasons. Some include the fact that the Debt crisis faced by many African countries is also largely a result of deepening poverty and inability to enhance production and productivity in many African countries. Africa’s indebtedness must be resolved through a planned development process of which the PRSPs are a part.

AFRODAD’s created this database of literature (experiences) of PRSPs in terms of content and process of five countries in Africa, particularly those that have completed the PRSPs. There are only 5 countries that have fully completed PRSPs: Uganda, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Thus, a comparative analysis of these five African countries with full PRSPs was carried out. This information will stimulate debate and analysis so that the PRSP process would enhance value at national, sub regional and regional levels.

The overall goal/objective of this database is to increase African civil society organisations (CSOs) capacity to understand and effectively engage in PRSP policy issues and processes, thereby influence donor policy change and response on such issues.

The specific objectives are as follows:

a). To provide ongoing basis on the experiences of PRSP process with the intention of moving towards monitoring PRSP processes.

b). To show from these processes the development policy issues and evaluate the content of five country PRSPs in terms of their consistency with the main development goals especially, poverty reduction as well as the similarities and differences in methodology of the process of PRSPs.

C). To stimulate engagement with CSOs in discussions and understanding of the policy issues in PRSPs.

The PRSP Database contains;

1. Five African Countries that have completed full PRSPs
2. Completed country PRSP documents – i.e. the government papers (looking at what the key poverty reduction strategies have been proposed and how they will be achieved),
3. CSOs contributions in terms of key issues raised in drawing up the PRSPs.
4. Analysis of CSOs involvement in PRSPs Process
5. Comparative Analysis of the inconsistencies in the macro-economic development policy content of PRSPs
6. Workshop Reports
7. Papers
