WEBINAR: Advancing Debt Justice through the Odious Debt Doctrine in Africa

AFRODAD is hosting a webinar titled "Out of the Shadows: Hidden Debts and the Odious Debt Doctrine in Africa."

Africa's growing debt crisis is not only a question of how much is owed, it is also about how those debts were incurred, who benefited from them, and who ultimately bears the burden of repayment. Across the continent, hidden loans, opaque borrowing practices and creditor complicity have left generations paying for debts contracted without public consent or benefit. These realities have renewed interest in the Odious Debt Doctrine (ODD), a legal principle that challenges the legitimacy of sovereign debts incurred under unjust or illegitimate circumstances.

The webinar will highlight AFRODAD's reconceptualised African approach to the Odious Debt Doctrine and discuss how it can serve as a practical tool for promoting debt justice, transparency, accountability and legal reform across the continent. The discussion will also highlight the relationship between odious debt and illicit financial flows, and identify strategies that governments, civil society, parliamentarians and regional institutions can pursue to prevent future debt injustices and perspectives on strengthening Africa's sovereign debt governance and advancing fair, transparent and accountable borrowing practices.

The webinar will examine emerging experiences from Kenya, Mozambique and Senegal, drawing lessons from recent developments that have exposed the consequences of hidden borrowing, weak oversight and the need for stronger accountability in sovereign debt management.
