Join us for the side session
AFRODAD is convening this side session at the Joint African Union (AU) 9th Session of the Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration and the 5th Session of the Specialised Technical Committee on Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals. The session will assess Africa's experience with the G20 Common Framework and highlight solutions towards a more effective and equitable sovereign debt restructuring architecture.
As debt vulnerabilities continue to rise across the continent, the G20 Common Framework has become the primary mechanism for debt restructuring for eligible countries. However, experiences from countries such as Zambia, Ghana, Chad, and Ethiopia have revealed persistent challenges, including lengthy negotiations, difficulties in securing private creditor participation, and delays that have prolonged economic uncertainty. The side session will examine these lessons, assess whether the current framework is fit for purpose, and explore practical alternatives that can better support African countries in resolving debt crises. It will also consider how the African Union can leverage its permanent G20 membership to advocate for a more transparent, timely, and rules-based global debt resolution framework.
