The Zimbabwe Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI)
At the 2026 Zimbabwe Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI), held on 15 September, AFRODAD partnered with the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) to amplify women’s voices in resource governance and advance feminist perspectives on debt justice.
Under the theme “Making Tax Work for Women: Women’s Pre-Budget Caucus,” the gathering provided a critical space for feminist advocates and civil society organisations to examine how tax policies, public finance, and resource governance intersect with gender inequality and debt justice. While AFRODAD’s core focus is debt and development finance, tax justice remains closely connected to debt justice, as domestic resource mobilisation, revenue generation, and equitable fiscal policies influence countries’ borrowing needs, debt sustainability, and capacity to finance essential public services.
Representing AFRODAD, Ivy Gurure, Vanessa Jaravaza, and Pasca Mushaike worked alongside feminist advocates and civil society counterparts to co-create a unified manifesto outlining shared positions and policy commitments ahead of Zimbabwe’s 2027 National Budget.
Through this engagement, AFRODAD contributed a debt justice perspective to discussions on gender-responsive taxation and public finance, highlighting the importance of fiscal systems that address structural inequalities and protect the rights and livelihoods of women and girls.
Linking tax justice to debt justice is essential to advancing equitable development. By strengthening advocacy at the intersection of debt, taxation, and gender, AFRODAD and its partners continue to promote economic systems that place social justice, accountability, and the well-being of communities at the centre of public policy.
